Second Grade with Ms. Doherty
Math Our learning focus is building strong problem solving skills. We learn to regroup with addition and subtraction of larger numbers, count money, understand fraction parts and geometric shapes.
Reading
We practice independent and group reading frequently every day in order to become fluent readers. Additionally, we focus on developing a deeper understanding, using comprehension strategies and text evidence of various texts.
Science
We learn the importance of asking questions and observing results to model scientific reasoning methods.
We develop our faith as we prepare for First Communion.
Class Highlights
October: Kinder to 2nd grade Pumpkin Patch Field Trip
November:We create disguises for turkeys to persuade others not to eat him for Thanksgiving dinner! To celebrate the giving spirit, Kinder to 2nd grade also perform a Thanksgiving play for their families, pie and sparkling cider included!
December: We conduct a class-wide project, "Christmas Around the World", researching ways kids in other countries celebrate Christmas.
February & March: Second graders prepare for and make their First Reconciliation. We also study influential men and women to learn from their perseverance and success.
April: Second grade celebrates First Communion.
Robust Learning Environment
In 2nd grade we incorporate many modalities of learning: sign language, movement, art, engaging lessons involving treats, and blending learning. Blended Learning is where students rotate between various stations that target personalized learning through the use of technology. One station can even scan QR codes!
