Kindergarten with Ms. Caputo

Math

We build the foundation to identify and write numbers , describe 2D and 3D shapes, sort objects and understand the calendar. We also learn to add and subtract within 10 and work together to read and solve word stories! In doing so, we use the Blended Learning format to individualize our learning, as we work in small groups, collaborate, and work individually to develop our Math skills. We play games, sing songs, and participate in hands-on activities to make us Math experts.

Science

We study Science units that are theme-based, and learn about interesting topics such as Animals, Habitats, Seasons, Weather, Magnets, and Solids, Liquids, Gases. We participate in Science inquiry projects, and tap into our curiosities with hands-on and fun experiments.

English (Phonics/Reading)

We build the foundation to become readers! We play online, hands on, and collaborative games and sing songs to learn our letters and sounds; and use tech-integrated programs such as Raz-Kids, Education.com, and iReady to help us find the fun in reading and writing. This goes hand in hand with our Blended Learning program where we work in small grouped stations to individualize our learning. We also study sight words, with a goal of being able to read 50 by the end of the year! We implement guided reading and use the Fountas & Pinnell assessment curriculum to push ourselves to be able to read at least two complete sentences on each page by the end of the year; and we use Writer’s Workshop to help us become confident writers! We also invite parents and friends to be “Mystery Readers” to come in and read fun and informational stories to our class. We celebrate reading every day!

Religion

We focus on the foundation that we are each a Child of God! We learn about the mass and parts of the church; and do fun projects and activities based on each liturgical season of the year (such as Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter). We study Saints, read Bible Stories in our very own Children’s Bibles, and learn a number of prayers that we practice throughout each day led by our Prayer Leader. We also participate in the Kinder-8th Second Step program which focuses on developing Social Emotional Learning. In this program, we are able to learn and practice conflict resolution, identify and manage our feelings, and practice fair ways to play, all which help us become confident, kind citizens of the world. Lastly, we also study a safety program which teaches us about car, street, fire, and stranger safety. We sing songs, reflect, and role play to deepen our understanding of developing the whole child.

Additional enrichment activities include:

  • Lego Learn to Learn Makerspace projects throughout the year
  • Halloween Pumpkin Project
  • Kinder - 2nd grade Thanksgiving Play and Family Dessert Celebration
  • Magic Elf Visits during Christmas - this helps us reach our best!
  • Field trips to the Pumpkin Patch, Christmas Sing-a-long at the Symphony, Randall Museum, Fire Station, Exploratorium and the Botanical Gardens

"We are a safe, fun-filled classroom where Kindergarteners learn from mistakes and build their love for learning and making friends!"
