6th Grade Homeroom with Ms. Li

Math
  Course instruction focus is on 4 critical concepts:
 
  • Connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of rate and ratio to solve problems
  • Completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative number 
  • Writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equation
  • Developing understanding of statistical thinking
 


Science
Students learn how plate tectonics contribute to how the earth changes over time. Students will understand the ways that human activities impact Earth’s systems and global climate change. Sixth graders attend CYO Environmental Ed camp for a week.
 
 
Social Studies
Students expand their understanding of history by studying the people and events that resulted in the development of the major Western and non-Western ancient civilizations. Continued emphasis is placed on the everyday lives, problems, and accomplishments of people, their role in developing social, economic, and political structures. In Geography, we learn about plate tectonics, earthquakes, rocks and minerals and STEM projects.
 
 
English Language Arts
  In   6th Grade, students read and analyze a wide range of literature from different times and cultures, with an increasing emphasis on analyzing informational text. The emphasis in sixth grade is on students’ comprehension of complex narrative and informational texts. Students will be introduced to themes related to race, ethnicity, self-identity, the American Dream, and nature and survival, among others. In their writing students will develop more sophisticated skills, such as using evidence from a variety of sources to support their purpose or conclusion. Students will continue developing their skills in writing persuasive essays, narratives, research papers, and informative texts.
