Religion
Students will learn the sacred scriptures and understand how to apply them to their lives. Students will deepen their knowledge of the Old and New Testaments. They will also be able to identify meaning of the Sacraments as a part of their faith development and the wider Church community.

Reading/Language Arts
Sixth grade students strive to master the steps of the writing process. Students brainstorm, outline, draft, revise, and publish essays in the standard five-paragraph format, learning how to organize and align subtopics to thesis statements. Sixth graders write with an emphasis on creative narratives and organization, while focusing on grammar topics such as homophones, verb agreement, plurals and possessives. Students also learn how to use presentation software for oral reports. Students continue to grow their knowledge of relationship with words. They use context clues to find meaning to expand their understanding and fluency when reading. Students are able to identify types of figurative language. Vocabulary development focuses on word origin, prefixes, suffixes, and how to identify root words.

Math
Sixth grade math is the pinnacle of elementary school math. During the sixth grade year, each student should display mastery of all of the elementary school math skills. These skills include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of integers, fractions, and decimals. During this time students are introduced to skills needed for success in Algebra such as solving one-step equations and displaying and analyzing data.

Science
Earth science is a specialized look at the planet in which we live. We start off with a look at the forces that build up and tear down our planet. These forces include weathering, erosion, and plate tectonics. Next we look at the factors that affect our weather patterns and in turn affect our climate. From climate, we incorporate the living and non-living things that make up our ecosystems. We end the year with a look at the resource of our earth. Sixth graders are expected to display their understanding of the scientific method by researching, creating, and displaying a science project.

Social Studies
In the sixth grade, students master coordinate mapping and navigation using latitude and longitude. They explore the beginning of humanity and our earliest civilizations such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, India and China. Students learn about adaptation, technology and the early spirituality of many cultures. Hands on activities such as “soap tool carving” compliment rigorous unit exams that push students to use basic independent study and organizational skills. Students learn outline note-taking format, in addition to research skills.
