In 8th Grade, students utilize the four language arts processes: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Students will learn about various literary devices, including plot structure, narration, imagery, symbolism, figurative language, etc. Students will also learn about the origin of literary texts such as fables, short stories, myths, and epics, and will read and analyze such texts to discern their meaning and import. Reading instruction will expose students to a variety of reading strategies for reading novels and expository text. Themes related to self-definition, society and class, gender, gentrification, morality, ethics, justice, judgment, and race will be explored. Writing instruction will include the development of written communication skills, including narrative, informative/explanatory, and argumentative writing
